This is your SolarWakeup for July 15th, 2015

Later today, in the basement of the Marriott Marquis in San Francisco we will be debating the C&I solar markets in the future. One topic that is bound to come is the difference between value and cost of solar in the space. There is no doubt that rooftop solar is more expensive than solar farms. That being said, what is the actual value created for the economy, ratepayers and grid operators. I don’t know the answer to it but I am sure that will be part of any response to the report that was published yesterday. See you all at InterSolar tomorrow if you are here!

The topic at the top of everyone’s mind here at Intersolar is the ITC, not a big surprise here. Don’t be fooled by the many silly talking points that a few small minority has on how it adds cost and complexity, total nonsense. Something new came up on my panel yesterday which I want to ask you. Has solar financing been democratized sufficiently? Do we need solar to be allowed to be formed into MLPs in order to be sufficiently democratized or are loans, leases, PPAs and crowdsourcing sufficient to make the case? Lastly, come see me at our Miami themed happy hour from 3-5pm at the GTM booth today!

Most of you have packed your bags and are heading to San Francisco today. I arrived late last night to take part of the annual get together at Intersolar. Speaking on a few panels this year focused on improving and expanding the C&I solar markets which is a market segment I find very important. As consumers around the Country put solar on their homes with various financial choices, the businesses still have limited opportunity (so they think) to put solar on their building. Today at 11am at the Intercontinental and tomorrow at 4pm come see me at the Marriott.

Your push yesterday to the Senate Finance Committee was incredibly helpful. Don’t stop now! I mentioned to you that there may be an interesting story coming out and probably will on Monday that shows that the solar tariffs, which got some relief today, are a political play for natural gas. This same political ploy is at work again, this time trying to lobby against the ITC. Major utilities are pushing for ITC, other sources don’t want the debate of tax credits and here we are trying to pass something that makes all the sense in the world. Keep pushing and make the call/email to your senator. Here is the link again

In politics there are windows of opportunity. Solar has a window right now to push members of congress especially members of the Senate Finance committee to include solar in the tax extenders bill. So you need to act. Click here and send a note to your representatives. Do you know your Senator? Have you given them contributions? Let me know. There are talking points of course and one story is coming out that isn't quite baked yet but a certain member of solar may be trying to undermine the sector. So it's that much more important for you to act now. Click here, tweet, Facebook and ask your coworkers/employees to do so as well.

The White House continues to push forward. In a timely move, meaning that the Government is jumping on community solar at a pace unknown to be usual for government, the administration pushes for more solar access to renters, low income and credit challenged Americans. Innovation in financing is an important topic, which I will be discussing on two panels next week in San Francisco during Intersolar. On Monday at the Sunspec panel on the innovations in C&I and on Tuesday at the PVMC moonshot event about how we can solve some of the issues around distributed solar. Great people coming together to teach me a few things, always a good time.

Last year I was asked by many readers to post more global news. In finding some interesting sites that cover other markets such as the UK and Australia, I have become interested in those market dynamics. With my work also taking me abroad, I usually find that the conservative political party in other Countries is still solar friendly (not always). The strangest of all politicians is Prime Minister Abbott in Australia. The headlines that come from his office are usually interesting but the today’s sarcasm tops it. I am sure a scientist somewhere will make it clear that taking all fossils out of the ground is a very, very bad idea for the earth.

Today’s top story is about a man that lived off-grid using nothing but solar energy for nearly 118 hours. Not that impressive except for the fact that he flew an airplane from Japan to Hawaii for over 4400 miles. The irony comes that while Hawaii is a solar leader and looking to get to 100% renewables, HECO filed to revamp the net metering rules on the day that the plane lands showing what the future could look like. Old versus new, the status quo is changing.

You’ve probably already heard all about it. Austin Energy went out for large scale solar and presented the results at an oversight hearing late last week. It’s worth a listen because it represents an interesting milestone in solar as some of the bids came in under $0.04/kWh. Many questions to be asked about the bids but Austin Energy calls them credible. Here is my fundamental takeaway. If $0.04/kWh works in Texas, where else does solar work or more importantly where doesn’t it? As you see utilities get more involved in solar, you can see why. The ‘solar is too expensive’ talking point is fading, quickly. Here is the presentation, around the 5 minute mark
