The solar industry is packed with some of the greatest innovators and entrepreneus in the Country.  At times, however, we let some of the downturn of the sector get to us and we don't always help each other as much as we could.  Take a moment and help someone today, make an intro, help someone get into a door or sign a petition.  Working together, we will strengthen the industry for everyone.

The big story of the day is the securitized private placement by SolarCity.  The $54.4million placement probably represents one of the early batches of projects at SCTY.  Lots of variables here but unknown at this point is the credit rating, and if it was higher than the Mid American or NextEra bonds for their solar farms.  Creating a viable exit plan for solar portfolios will definitely help. Uniform credit profiles and documentation will be key for future developers!

Yesterday was the anniversary for Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy.  A year and $65Billion later, it is one of the greatest climate disasters of all time.  It also showed the potential and shortfall of distributed solar generation.  Many owners were surprised that solar on their roofs could not provide off-grid energy but an opportunity was born.  The marriage of DG Baseload like CHP or energy storage with solar presents the opportunity of the next decade, microgrids and reduction of utility dependencies.

Happy Halloween! As a SolarWakeup treat I want to point you to two reads for the holiday. 1. Women4Solar is a group of women in the solar industry who feel passionately the industry can do a better job communicating with female homeowners and Moms.  The group is helping solar companies sell more effectively to women, and I love their idea! 2. Jigar Shah, the well known founder of Sunedison, has published his book, Creating Climate Wealth.  While I have not read it yet, I plan to and will make sure to let you know how good it is. Let me know if … Read More

The solar industry is a great place to work.  While it has its challenges, it is great to see new innovation be recognized.  Either at the start-up alley during SPI or by the DOE SunShot program.  I have the privilege to work with great innovators in the solar industry as part of one of the companies in the SunShot program, congratulations to all of the companies recognized in the latest round.  The combined work will result in more solar being installed across the Country.

One aspect of taking on solar advocacy is the multiple fronts.  Our industry is covered well by a few groups and hopefully their advocacy will be able to take on the multiple markets.  One thing remains clear, the solar industry has to get involved in PUC commission elections and nominations.  Having solar friendly faces on these boards will make the battlefield for solar policies fair for all.

Arizona has gone from two sides arguing their position and lobbying to one of the most overt corporate scandals in recent times.  Utilities have incredible resources at their disposal and apparently APS is not afraid to put them to work, in any way, shape or form.  It's a sad day for consumers, but I am glad to see and hear that the solar industry now stands up for itself in a whole new way.  Support Arizona solar and check out TASC
