Going Public. Reuters has the news that the solar loan and financing provider, Sunnova, is planning to go public. Over the years, Sunnova has built an impressive dealer network across the Country. The filing, likely still confidential at this point, is the first step in the process but as a financing provider, the path could be primed for success. With a growing market, Sunnova is poised to succeed in this process.
Respect The Roof. The solar industry has to figure out a plan to combat bad installers that are lying and cheating homeowners across the Country. This happens in most sectors but solar is under a microscope and some States have enacted consumer rights processes. The problem is that much of that is new and not being followed by the bad actors. The same is true for installers that are not using code compliant products and installation methods. Most of the focus is on the lending rules but not on creating a system that will work for 25-30 years, so we have to do more to get good solar on roofs across the Country.
Retailers Fight For Solar Access. Retailers have long fought for their own secure access to solar contracts. This Bloomberg story is about Target in Virginia but trade groups have been fighting this battle ever since I’ve been in solar.
Climate In Iowa? With terrible flooding and farmers understanding the risk of climate change, the more traditional campaign run by Vice President Biden is bringing the issue up on the campaign. In head to head programming with Trump, the Biden campaign is clearly seeing polling and voter data that says this issue brings voters over to their campaign.

Bad Idea To Ask. If PG&E asks the bankruptcy court to cancel PPAs for solar and wind generation and the court grants it, PG&E will have eliminated its ability to sign new contracts and increased the cost to consumers in one giant mistake. This will make CCAs the viable alternative for developers to sign contracts with and reduce the need for PG&E to exist. That is exactly why they are busy doling out advertising dollars across the energy universe, because goodwill is always needed most right before you do something like this.
MI IRP Approved. Good news for Michigan. Now let’s go back and make distributed generation better for all the homeowners in the State.
Electric Mass Transit. Great interview with one of the more interesting CEOs in the clean tech space, the CEO of Proterra.

Bloomberg Commits $500million. True story, my first winter in Baltimore, someone had donated a ton of money border the walkways with granite pavers which were a blast during icy days. Bloomberg is allocating capital to better causes these days, committing another $500million to close the remaining coal plants in the US. Here’s my issue with this approach. The world would be a better place if that money endowed solar advocacy, our industry has the best return on investment when it comes to lobbying because we have the facts and voters on our side. So how about a compromise? $400million for coal and $100million for solar?
Deregulation Autopilot Gone Awry. Trump is looking to clear the proverbial field for auto OEMs, setting up a fight with California over fuel standards. The problem with that is that OEMs know that the trend goes the other direction and a 2 year return to the 1980s isn’t going to help their shareholders. They know that cars need to be electric and efficient regardless of the regulation and changing the rules stops them from being able to explain to their short term focused shareholders what they need to be doing right now.
A Debate Topic Versus Debate. The DNC says that climate change will be a topic during the debate and Presidents need to be able to multi task. So I ask the DNC, what will the question be? What will you do about climate change? Your answer in 90 seconds, go! This will only lead to a 6 minutes abs scenario where everyone goes for the 100% by answer and forgets the meat of the topic. Solving energy transition in coal communities, retooling manufacturing to clean energy (candidates should come visit me in Walnut Creek), and how to leverage climate topics in foreign policy to get other countries on board.
Fire Season Starts. PG&E had its first outage this weekend, shutting off power to about 25,000 customers and businesses. This wasn’t a population center but it caused chaos with calls flooding the 911 centers. Imagine when this strikes the Bay Area and business, factories and hotels have to shut down or go to backup generators.

DNC Failing On Climate. Governor Inslee, who is running on the climate platform, took to Twitter yesterday and let us know that the DNC has declined to host a debate solely focused on climate change. Not only did they decline but they will ban him from future debates if he attends an unsanctioned debate.
Support From Warren. Senator Warren retweeted the Governor and said the issue is too important to run away from. (See the tweet) Warren understands that the middle class she is fighting to expand has plenty of opportunity in clean energy and has unveiled a clean energy manufacturing program. Companies like Quick Mount PV, which manufacturers in Walnut Creek California not only grows jobs in sales and operations throughout the country but also expands aluminum manufacturing and logistics jobs similar to those in the auto sector for example.
The Climate Tide Has Shifted. Biden will be the 17th Presidential candidate to sign the no fossil fuel money pledge and most major campaigns have unveiled trillion dollar plans to speed up the clean energy transition focused on a time sensitive decarbonization effort. AOC and the Sunrise Movement have made the Green New Deal mainstream and Congressman Massie of Kentucky brags about the solar on his house. Voters want to learn more about what some consider the most important issue in politics today, there is no downside in the DNC sponsoring this debate. The host of Political Climate, Julia Pyper, has offered to moderate the debate!
More From Biden. Biden released a 5 minute video talking about climate and clean energy.
Trade Issues For Solar. Keep your eyes on the tariff Trump is threatening on Mexican imports. Much of the plan B for Chinese tariffs involved Mexico and Trump knows that. The Senate republicans look like they may push back on it however but the power of tariffs heavily relies on the President.

Biden Climate Plan. The former Vice President is out with his climate plan and it is definitely influenced by the large field moving towards decarbonization much faster than was expected just a few years ago. Biden’s plan calls for net-zero by 2050 and calls the Green New Deal a crucial framework. Note that this is pushed forward as Biden is slipping in the polls and chose to skip the California Democratic convention. There is also late comment about and apology from the campaign regarding lack of citations around the policy document which apparently failed to acknowledge some sources.
A Frustrating Job. The chairman of the CPUC, an incredibly interesting and important job, is stepping down from the commission. This comes ahead of the wildfire related decisions that need to happen this fall. When interviewed about the job, Picker said it wasn’t the worst job he’s ever had but it is the most frustrating. Bureaucracy will do that to you!
Solar Investor Buys Utility. JP Morgan’s Infrastructure Investment group, which is the same team that acquired Sonnedix, has acquired the El Paso Electric Company for over $2billion.
Solar Powered Beer. Anheuser Busch is entering into an agreement to buy energy from a 222MW solar farm in Texas developed by Recurrent Energy, the division of Canadian Solar. The project, coupled with a smaller project, is also entering into a 15 year contract with Energy Transfer Partners who explicitly said that cost was a motivating driver. ETP will reach 20% of its energy use from renewable sources.
Kids Go To Court. After the Supreme Court kicked the kid climate suit back to the 9th circuit, the kids and the US Government went back to court. The Government’s case is ridiculous, in my opinion. For without clean air and water, kids in America will not have their right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness.

PURPA Solar Shakeup. There has been a shakeup at the PURPA development leader, Cypress Creek Renewables. It’s been one of the unlikeliest stories in solar (PURPA in general has) taking advantage of a decades old law never meant to spur gigawatts of solar development. I look forward to getting to know the new team at Cypress Creek and seeing what is in store for them going forward.
Commercialization Is Not Bankable. There is a flaw with how non solar media treats the opinions of people from inside the industry. From experts that say that Sunedison can buy solar assets at negative IRRs (because their stock increases for more than the acquisition price) or that tax credits can spur commercialization. Solar financing pros will tell you that tax equity investors hate risk above all. Decarbonization will happen through the mass deployment of commercialized products that have been commercialized through risk adjusted equity investments.
Veto Solar Rules, Not Support. The governor of New Hampshire is shutting down growth of solar in NH once again. The goal is for the veto proof margin to hold in the override this year.
Late To The Game, Again. Solar fees just in time to stop the start of the solar market in New York? Any fee added to the solar customers would stop the market right as it gets off the ground and hurt the positive intentions of the fee.
New Reliability Study. PVEL is out with its 2019 Module Reliability Study. For more on this topic, listen to my interview with PVEL CEO Jenya Meydbray.
Aggregation Note. As GTM adds a login to their news site, which is still free, I wanted to share some thoughts on the fact that most sites now have either a paywall or a login. The login is meant to track your reading and appeal to advertisers, which I know is not something everyone likes. On the other hand, content creators have to get paid somehow. I will continue to post content from various sources, as long as they are okay with it, even if there is a paywall. You may find a story interesting enough to subscribe and if not then at least you know that the story exists.

Arizona Drama. An ACC commissioner is out and joining a branch of the government in an administrative role. On his way out, Tobin makes strong comments about the role of the staff at the ACC, which is similar to most other PUCs around the Country or any office in government. Good luck getting to the official without the support of the staff.
The Role of One. Most trends happen when one person does something over and over again, that something gains the attention of others and grows. Greta Thunberg is a good example, starting her climate protests on Fridays by herself before being the center of attention at all the climate conferences. (Catch her interview with Julia Pyper from Austria)
Watch Your Supply Chain. We continue to struggle with trade policy by tweet and everyone is going to get affected by this. Most solar parts are made offshore or at least contain offshore commodities that are now impacted by tariffs. China and Mexico are linked quite closely as many offshore manufacturers have locations in both. Make sure you lock in your supply chain relationships now, especially with companies that have domestic assembly capability.

Presidential Climate Rankings. A report card for presidential candidates’ climate plans is out and not all are created equal. The report is also quite transparent on how people fared. The democratic leader, Joe Biden, is ranked at the bottom of the list with a D+ but we still expect to see more details on the plan. Many talking heads are saying that climate change is an issue that touches people’s hearts and minds but will not affect their voting, Biden in the lead is exhibit A. Inslee barely making the first debate is exhibit B.
What Biden Should Do. Biden’s team is floating VP names early in the process for various political reasons. What the former VP should do is announce his team for clean energy policy right now and it should include names that you and I would find familiar. Announce Inslee as the EPA Administrator or David Crane as Secretary of Energy, that would make this an interesting conversation.
Solar And Coal Have A Baby. A small modular reactor is born! The fantasy is highlighted by the NEI CEO in the Bloomberg interview and it’s as crazy and unrealistic as solar partnering with coal. Also, the sun not shining and wind not blowing isn’t the best argument anymore.
DOE PR Agents. Exporting US molecules of freedom is the most insane sentence I’ve read.
